What is the Australian Dental Council (ADC) written examination?
The Australian Dental Council (ADC) Written Examination is designed to test the candidate’s knowledge of the science and practice of dentistry and to assess clinical judgement and reasoning skills relevant to dental practice in Australia. The Written Examination is normally held twice a year, over two full consecutive days.
Written examination format
The ADC uses scenario based multiple-choice questions (MCQs) for its written examinations.Well-constructed and delivered MCQs are a highly objective method of assessing knowledge in dentistry, with high levels of validity and reliability3,4. MCQs are acknowledged for their effectiveness in high stakes assessments, such as for the purpose of registration 4,5. The use of scenario-based MCQs allows for the assessment of not only knowledge but also the application of knowledge. ADC candidates must successfully complete the written examination before being able toprogress to the practical examination. To ensure currency of knowledge, the practical
examination must be completed within three years of successful completion of the written
examination
